Hi, my name is Dr. Ken Overmyer from the Shorewood Animal Hospital in Shorewood, Illinois. Thank you for watching my video. Today we are going to talk about the topic of microchipping in dogs. In the old day, we would put a collar on our dog that would identify the owner in case the dog gets lost and is found by someone else.
Pet Id Microchip are better than collars.
Well, collars fall off the dogs’ neck and dogs chew their collars and tags. Now, we have better ways of ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our dogs if they do get lost. The product we use is called the 24PetWatch microchip. The chip, as you can see, is about the size of a grain of rice. The microchip is placed between the shoulder blades of the animal. The microchip is used on dogs and cats. We typically do the procedure when the animal is sedated, usually at the time of spaying or neutering because a larger needle is used to put the chip in; but, it could be done when they are wide awake. They don’t love it; but, they tolerate it fairly well.
Pet Id Microchip are tolerated well.
The procedure is quick. Using an injector, the chip is pushed in between the shoulder blades. If the dog gets lost and is taken to Animal Control, a scanner is used to read the information on the chip. The information is called in to a national 800 number where the animal’s owner and its veterinarian are identified. The veterinarian is contacted by Animal Control, and the veterinarian contacts the owner. So you see, the chip does not fall out or get chewed up and your pet is safely returned to you.
