Pet Euthanasia – Putting a Pet to Sleep
Hi, my name is Dr. Ken Overmyer from the Shorewood Animal Hospital in Shorewood, Illinois. Thank you for taking the time to watch my video. (New clients can register here)
Pet Euthanasia – Putting a Pet to Sleep is a Somber Topic.
Today we are going to talk about the somber topic of humane euthanasia. Unfortunately, as pet owners, we will have to go through this at some point in time. Euthanasia is performed if an animal is suffering because of a long, chronic disease and no longer responds to medication and treatment or if the animal is suffering because of trauma or other reasons and the owner is unable to afford the expensive care and treatment of the animal. The way we perform euthanasia here at Shorewood Animal Hospital will depend upon the condition of the animal when presented to us. If the animal is excitable or in a lot of pain, we typically give the animal a sedative before we administer a solution of an overdose of anesthetic. The animal will then quickly pass. If the animal comes to us in a very severe state of shock or is comatose, the tranquilizer is no longer needed before the euthanasia solution is injected.
Pet Euthanasia – Putting a Pet to Sleep Includes Handling of Remains
After the animal is put to sleep, the owner has a couple of options. We use a service that picks up the remains for cremation. Some owners want the ashes back, others do not. Ashes are delivered to owners in decorative tins or in fancy urns. If the ashes are not wanted back, the crematory scatters the ashes for us. Some owners choose to bury the remains of the animal. In this case, village regulations need to be consulted to make sure this is allowed. Again, thank you for watching this video of a very somber topic.
