Heartworm Pet Meds
Hi, my name is Dr. Dave Robinson from Shorewood Animal Hospital in Shorewood, Illinois. Today I would like to talk about parasites in dogs. Let’s start with heartworm disease. It is carried by mosquitoes. As mosquitoes feed on one infected dog, the disease is spread to other dogs when the disease-carrying mosquitoes bite other dogs. The parasite is injected into the blood stream. Those juveniles will then find their way into the heart, particularly the right side where they develop into worms that look like these. These worms extend from the right ventricle into the pulmonary artery and sometimes fall into the walls. This disease causes changes in the heart and pulmonary cavity as they age.

Heartworm Pet Meds Products
My job as a veterinarian is to try to prevent disease not just treat disease. We have two different products here at SAH. They are Interceptor and Sentinel, both are preventive medications. The difference between them is while both drugs protect the pets from heartworm and other intestinal worms, Sentinel gives added protection from fleas. We at SAH want to protect your pets from 3 intestinal worms. They are whipworms, roundworms and hookworms. Roundworms and hookworms could infect humans causing skin issues. Their larvae could find their way into the human brain, eyes and nose. Our goal is to protect humans from the potential danger these worms present. We recommend the use of these products year-round even if the disease is not a year-round disease because the products protect the pets and humans from other worms.
Heartworm Pet Meds Products May Prevent Fleas.
Fleas, aside from causing allergic reactions from bites to cats and dogs, carry the tapeworm parasite as well. The tapeworm is another intestinal parasite that causes intestinal disease. Fleas bite humans as well; so, it is very important that we protect our pets from fleas. If you are concerned with other than fleas, the product Frontline offers protection against both ticks and fleas. Unfortunately, Frontline is only offered in topical form. There is no ingestible product available that protects animals from ticks. Frontline is recommended for dogs that are exposed to high grass and wooded areas where deer ticks are most likely to be found. The deer tick is the commonly known carrier of lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases.
Heartworm Pet Meds Are Only Guaranteed If…
Lately, you may have noticed a great number of vendors hawking these products online guaranteeing cheaper price; however, buying from these vendors has the potential of costing you dearly in that if the products purchased online fail, Merial, the manufacturer, will not cover the costs and you will end up paying for the expensive care and treatment of the diseases that result from product failure. Licensed veterinarians are authorized sellers of these products and are covered by the manufacturers’ guarantee. We hope you continue to purchase these products from Shorewood Animal Hospital.
